WHY ENGAGE FAMILIES ?

Family-engaged developmental screening and ongoing monitoring is an intentional partnership you have with families.  When put into practice, you combine your knowledge of child development with their expertise about their child to better understand their child’s developmental path, including celebrating progress and identifying opportunities for growth and support.

When you engage in meaningful relationships with the families you serve, you learn more about the child’s development, family priorities and concerns.  You have the opportunity to affirm families’ support of their child’s development, and offer information, tools, tips and activities for families to use at home to increase their knowledge of healthy child development and foster their child’s development.

When you intentionally establish a relationship with families you invite them to celebrate their child’s progress and put them at ease to have conversations around their family’s needs and concerns.  Children are more likely to receive the services they need to be successful!

RESOURCES TO SUPPORT FAMILIES

The following resources can be shared with parents/guardians to explain why developmental screening and monitoring are so important to their child and family, and how the role of parents/guardians is key to the success of this process.

Learning Activities, Newsletters, and Tip Sheets – After discussing ASQ® screening results with parents, staff can copy developmentally appropriate learning activities handouts, informational newsletters, and topical tip sheets to share with parents to support their children’s development and encourage parent-child interactions.  Your center is given access to a link to these resources upon completion of the onboarding process.
